Before you pick a vet, ask three things: do they see emergencies and, if not, which 24-hour hospital do they send you to; who answers the phone after hours and on weekends; and how they handle a first visit with a nervous pet. A good clinic tells you plainly when something can wait until morning versus when to come in now, gives you a real estimate before treatment, and takes the time to let an anxious dog or cat settle instead of rushing the exam.
